What does the sun sound like?

The sun is the star that is closest to our planet and plays an extremely important role in our comfortable life in the universe. With a number of unique properties, the sun seems to us to be an absolutely calm and almost harmless object, even compared to its small neighbors in the galaxy – the M dwarfs, which emit a large amount of radiation and electromagnetic noise. If the cosmic vacuum did not hinder the movement of the sound, what would the sound from the sun look like? This is the question posed by authors of the journal Astronomy, who decided to conduct a new study in one of their articles. It turned out that despite the fact that our sun seems to be calm, the sound of a star can simply drive us crazy under certain conditions. What does the sun sound like?

The sounds of the sun could easily drive us crazy

The sun can make strange noises

The massive ball of superheated plasma, which our Sun is by nature, is constantly undergoing convection cycles in which millions of pockets of superheated gas alternate with a violent roar. Fortunately for all mankind, the vacuum is unable to make noise, but even if we could hear it, it would be unlikely that we could appreciate its tune.

Heliophysicist Craig Deforest of the Southwestern Research Institute's Space Research Department believes that our nearby sun could "scream" under vacuum-free conditions as if 10,000 earths were completely covered with police sirens.

Each "cell" on the Sun's surface is similar to the size of the state of Texas in North America.

Taking into account that the Earth is 148 million kilometers from the Sun, the sound of a star near our planet could reach 100 decibels, similar to a modern rock concert. However, if a short stay under such conditions is not particularly dangerous for humans, existence throughout our life under the influence of high noise levels can hardly be described as a pleasant pastime. At least you and I would have been hard of hearing. In the worst case, we would simply die out and hardly appear on the planet in the form of more or less developed creatures.

However, it would be wrong to consider our universe as an absolutely "stupid" place. Every second, all objects in the universe exchange electromagnetic waves, different types of radiation and "noise" with each other, because stars, pulsars and even black holes have the ability to "sound". Without special equipment that can convert the radiation from our universe into wave vibrations that we know, you and I could never hear these “noises”.

By the way, we already wrote in one of our articles that scientists can even convert digital photography into music, which you can hear in the video for this article.
