Items that glow due to the reaction of bacteria and chemicals

New Atlas reported on the new technology that can be used to make jewelry. Through experiments with various substances, the scientists succeeded in producing the so-called "hybrid living material". It is a mixture of two types of resins and gels that are actively used in 3D printing and consist of bacteria that were grown under laboratory conditions by E. coli. Interaction with chemicals one of the varieties of resins, microbes begin to shine in beautiful colors.

But what exactly are the two types of "ink" for 3D printing? The first is standard plastic, which gives the figure strength. The second type of resin is temporary and is commonly used to support the overhanging parts of the structure and is removed after printing. The researchers found that the temporary resin perfectly absorbs foreign matter and decided to add chemicals that activate the luminous properties of bacteria.

After printing several objects on a 3D printer from a mixture of standard plastic and resin-impregnated resin, they coated them with gel from prepared bacteria. After a while, the chemicals triggered the reaction expected from scientists, and glowing patterns began to form on the outer shell of the product printed on a 3D printer. According to researchers, they can achieve an even greater variety of patterns with other types of chemicals and bacteria.
