Before we could tell you about antiviral drugs with unproven effectiveness, the media spread information that China officially recognized arbidol as a coronavirus drug. This has been reported by The Bell citing a source. It was previously announced that the Chinese government intends to test a number of drugs to treat CoVID-2019. According to the Xinhua News Agency, the PRC Department of Health included Arbidol in the sixth version of the Coronavirus CoVID-2019 Coronavirus 2019 Treatment Plan on February 18. The previous version was valid from February 5th. It has been reported that the effectiveness of coronavirus antiviral drugs has not been confirmed in clinical studies.
Desperate search for drugs from CoVID-2019
Despite criticism of the drug, arbidol, which was developed in the USSR in the 1970s, is still in high demand in Russia and is even included in the list of essential essential drugs (vital and essential drugs). According to Vedomosti, sales from the sale of the drug for 2019 amounted to 2.5 billion rubles. Previously, manufacturers of arbidol and ingavirin had launched an advertising campaign to determine that these drugs are effective against coronaviruses. At the same time, WHO experts and world experts report that CoVID-2019 is poorly understood today and that there is no cure for it. In addition, the Chinese authorities recently prohibited Wuhan residents, the epicenter of an infectious disease outbreak, from leaving their homes. At the time of writing, the official number of people infected with the new coronavirus was at least 76,000. More than two thousand infected people died.
The patent for the production of arbidol ended in 2007 and six large pharmaceutical companies in China are currently producing it as a generic. For the first time, "Arbidol" can be used as a drug against coronavirus, said virologists from Zhejiang University. They were later supported by an expert from the Ministry of Health of the PRC. According to Chinese virologists, preliminary tests of "Arbidol" showed that the drug can inhibit the replication of the coronavirus and slow it down 60-fold compared to the control group. However, no studies have been published to demonstrate the effectiveness of the drug.

Abidol or arbidol?
According to the PRC Minister of Health's statement on the successful trials with arbidol and the increasing interest in this drug in China, the world and the Russian media have not agreed on what type of drug it is – "Abidol" or "Arbidol ".
The fact is that the CGTN channel that Reuters followed in their reports called the drug "Abidol". However, other publications are directly concerned with the drug "Arbidol", which is manufactured in China and Russia. In the end, the information that virologists consider "arbidol" as a remedy for the coronavirus has been confirmed by official Chinese media, including the China Daily.

Thus, the PRC authorities can use the drug as an anti-CoVID 2019 coronavirus drug with unproven effectiveness. But why? It is possible that the Chinese Ministry of Health decided to take such a step in order to at least a little calm the people of the Middle Kingdom. An unprecedented quarantine, a ban on residents of some regions from leaving their homes, and visits to public places can exacerbate an already difficult situation. In this case, the use of "Arbidol" as a mass placebo appears to be a good solution for the authorities. Of course, it is impossible to completely rule out the possibility that this drug is really effective against coronavirus. Such high-profile statements, however, require undeniable evidence.
