Black holes can turn out to be portals for journeys through space and time.

Our world is a pretty strange place. Physicists have long believed that our universe can only be one of many, and some of the most mysterious objects in the universe – black holes – can turn out to be portals to other worlds. But what if black holes are not portals to other worlds, but portals for travel through space and time? And indeed – black holes balance between science fiction and science fact. On the one hand, scientists saw how black holes absorb stars that were too close to them. On the other hand, on the edge of the black hole, there is a place known as an event horizon where nothing can escape, not even light. But what happens to a spaceship when it gets there?

It is possible that you are in a black hole in another galaxy

What happens in a black hole?

Given all the data we have about black holes, scientists believed that nothing good was waiting for us in these massive objects. However, the latest computer simulation has shown that you can move to a distant part of the Milky Way or another galaxy in a black hole. In this case, one of the safest portals can be a supermassive black hole in the center of our galaxy – Sagittarius A *. Business Insider writes about this with reference to NASA researchers.

We do not know what happens in the black hole beyond the event horizon. Scientists agree that if you penetrate a black hole far enough, gravity will become so strong that it will destroy everything on its way. But science fiction films are more optimistic – in them black holes are portals for journeys through space and time or portals for journeys to other worlds. In fact, in the middle of each black hole is a point of infinite density called a singularity. It is the singularity that gives black holes a strong attraction. For decades, scientists believed that the singularities of all blacks are the same, so everything that goes through the event horizon is destroyed in the same way: everything will stretch and stretch like infinitely long spaghetti.

A singularity is a point of infinite density within a black hole.
The event horizon is the edge of a black hole from which nothing can escape, not even light.

Here is the first black hole photo.

However, all of this changed in the early 1990s when various research groups in Canada and the United States discovered a second singularity called "mass inflation singularity". This discovery suggests that you can theoretically survive a trip through a black hole. It will stretch you, but it won't ultimately kill you, which means you can survive the journey through a black hole. More precisely, through a large rotating black hole in which singularities of this kind exist. Now astronomers have to find a suitable black hole to test this theory. And the best place to check this is Sagittarius A * – a supermassive black hole in the center of our galaxy that's 27,000 light years away from us.

Since there is no way to get there, this theory can only be checked with the help of computer simulation. This is exactly what scientists from Umass University of Dartmouth and Georgia College did. According to the results, in Sagittarius A * nothing can be felt at the right speed and at the right time.

On the other side of the black hole

Black holes are one of the most mysterious objects in the universe.

What happens when you get to the other side is almost impossible to say. However, the authors of the study have their own ideas. According to the researchers, there is a possibility that you will end up in a distant part of our galaxy – possibly away from planets or stars, and after the second probability you could even end up in another galaxy. It all depends on how far you can get into the black hole. Still, scientists believe that more research is needed before we can successfully embark on a black hole journey. But when we're ready, the super-massive black hole in the middle of the Milky Way could turn out to be our lucky ticket to another galaxy.
