Why am I afraid of the corona virus and those who say that it is not dangerous?

Spread the love

I have been quarantined in my apartment for a few days. No, I haven't visited countries with coronavirus infections in the past few weeks, and doctors don't seem to diagnose COVID-2019. Although the symptoms of the disease were initially very anxious, they turned out to be very similar to those that occur with coronavirus. Using my own example, I've felt how easy it is to get sick, even though I'm sure I haven't contacted anyone who is infected. And now I confess to myself that I'm afraid of the corona virus. But I'm even more careful with those who say that the new virus is not dangerous.

Only through quarantine could China take control of the coronavirus situation

And there are many such people among us, and you don't have to go far to give an example – just read the comments on the latest articles about Coronavirus or some news in our telegram chat. People are obviously not aware of the seriousness of the situation.

It looks like we have an expert here at RAS, otherwise not

In fact, only coronavirus has three times the mortality rate

Borders are closed, schools too, but we don't believe in quarantine

Almost 200,000 are already infected

That's just AIDS doesn't stay on the surface

I will try to dispel such messages using a personal example.

What many people laughed at in mid-January and thought that none of this would go beyond China is spreading around the world at incredible speed. Two months ago, the number of people infected with coronavirus barely exceeded several thousand, and all were registered in Asia. At the time of this writing, the number of cases of COVID-2019 in the world has increased to 190,000 people. And although it is not clear when the growth rate of the spread of the coronavirus will slow down: it already seems that 1 million infected people are only a matter of time.

The virus grew rapidly outside of China because no quarantine measures were taken

Corona virus or flu?

Unfortunately, many are still not taking the pandemic seriously. As one of the arguments, they cite cases of influenza infections and acute respiratory viral infections – they say the infection is even higher from these diseases, there are victims too, but nobody is worried. However, here we have to watch another show – mortality. Only 0.1% of cases of normal flu; In Italy, an average of 3% of patients worldwide die from coronavirus – around 5%. Of 100 people, 3 die from coronavirus and only 1 out of 1,000 people from FLU. The fact that a vaccine has been around for a long time already matters, and many are vaccinated and have immunity to it.

If flu symptoms usually appear the next day after infection, the symptoms of the coronavirus may not manifest within 14 days! And all the time, the infected person will leave the house, work on public transport and spread the virus safely in his city.

The main thing is that the corona virus is very stable and stays on different surfaces for a long time. If influenza is predominantly transmitted by airborne droplets, COVID-2019 particles can live up to 4 hours on copper, 24 hours on cardboard and 2-3 days on plastic and stainless steel.

How many people can become infected after contact with an infected patient? There is an indicator R0 for this: For measles, this indicator is 12-14, ie a person can infect 14. For corona viruses, this indicator is between 2 and 5. For example, seasonal influenza R0 = 1.5. This means that the degree of distribution of the coronavirus is 2-3 times higher than that of the usual GRIP.

This means that a person may not have any contact with the infected person, but will simply hold on to the same handrail in the subway the next day – and be on the list of patients.

The main symptoms of the coronavirus COVID-19:
– a sharp change in condition
– high temperature (approx. 40 degrees)
– noticeable breathing difficulties
– To cough
– vomiting
diarrhea
an itchy rash (manifested in rare cases)

How can I stop the corona virus?

The main way to stop the spread of COVID-2019 is through quarantine and self-isolation. Back to my example: A few days ago I felt sick and feverish. Did I go straight to the doctor? Of course not – for some reason, self-medication and the fear of doctors are widespread in Russia. I stay at home for a few days, everything passes and you can go back to work. Not yet. I managed to lower the temperature a little, and after examining the symptoms of the coronavirus, I found that the disease is very different.

Still, fear took its toll. I went to the district clinic for medical advice. A 60-year-old grandmother met me at the entrance, who measured everything at the inlet temperature with a non-contact thermometer. Did she wear a special costume? No, just a medical white coat and mask. This immediately raised questions as older people are at the first risk group for coronavirus mortality. My question was ignored: "Well, someone has to measure the temperature!"

I was lucky that I came to the doctor on a day off and there were only a few people in the clinic. The doctor listened to me, measured the temperature with a conventional mercury thermometer, listened to the symptoms and came to the conclusion that my illness was more like a cold or SARS. I haven't offered to do a coronavirus analysis, and as I understand it, they have tools like this far from any clinic. But he prescribed treatment and strongly recommended isolating yourself from others for a few days – at least until the symptoms were so pronounced.

Corona virus self-isolation

How can you isolate yourself from society? The easiest (safest) way is to not leave home for 14 days, even if you don't have symptoms of a coronavirus! Now there are so many cool services for ordering food and products, medication, clothing and online entertainment that are not a problem. Yes, not everyone can work remotely, but if you can organize this, don't hesitate to ask your bosses to work from home.

Even if you feel good and don't have a runny nose or cough, try to minimize contact with other people. Deny trips to shopping centers, a hairdresser, a manicure – from anything where you can get unwanted contact. Believe me, nothing will happen if you miss fitness classes (especially since many freeze for free for a month) or don't do a scheduled haircut. If possible, go to work by car or public transport. It is better to avoid the subway as artificial ventilation is an excellent medium for the spread of coronavirus.

In Moscow, meetings in rooms with more than 50 people have already been banned because of the corona virus. Think about it!

I already feel on the mend, but still try not to leave the house. Not so much because I'm afraid of getting infected, but because I don't accidentally infect others. Unfortunately, many people take the situation too lightly. Moscow schools have already introduced free participation, and from March 21, educational institutions will be completely closed. This means that children have no contact with other children and adults to protect them from infections. But just as I write this article, there are a lot of children in the playground behind the house! They did not go to school and their parents sent them for a walk despite the recommendations from the authorities. And what is the purpose of quarantine if the population has not yet recognized the complexity of their situation?

Why quarantine

Quarantine isolation is the most effective way to combat the spread of the coronavirus. If you don't enter it, the rate of spread of the disease grows exponentially. As a result, the United States and European countries are closing their borders, schools and entertainment are not working. You don't have to follow any examples – Lyubov Sokovikova has already explained why quarantine is the best way to fight the CoVID-19 pandemic.

This happens when you ignore the quarantine and don't stay at home.

If people do not leave their homes, the number of new cases of infection slows significantly and the number of cases begins to decrease as the number of people recovered increases. This is the only way to combat the spread of the virus, especially if no vaccine has yet been developed from it.

A completely different picture – contacts between people are minimized

So far, according to my observations on the streets of Moscow and other cities in Russia, everything has gone in the direction of the development of the situation as on the first map. Many continue to take to the streets without unnecessary necessity. Do you think they realize that something terrible is coming because they buy up all the pasta, cereals and canned goods? No. It was just a rumor that groceries would soon run out, and many turned on the '90s with empty shelves in shops and queues for milk and a loaf of bread. Most of them don't understand what is happening.

In Kazakhstan it is also unclear what they believe in.

How did you deal with the virus in China and South Korea? They quickly introduced a mass quarantine (yes, even at Apple and Samsung factories), started with large-scale disinfection, and organized mobile points where they can run a coronavirus test without contacting other potential infected people. You need the permission of the mobile application to go out! Other countries recognize that this must happen earlier than the Chinese and Koreans, including the Russian authorities. But until people explain the whole threat of the impending threat or impose harsh penalties for quarantine violations, these measures won't make sense.

We monitor the spread of the coronavirus every day – this is currently known.

The consequences of the corona virus

This disease has shown how unprepared we are for diseases. At this point in time, if the mortality from the virus were higher, it would be possible to question human existence as a species. So far there is no such problem, but if you don't take it seriously, who knows how it will end.

Even if the pandemic is over, we will most likely not be able to travel as before for at least a few years. The borders will open, but a wave of tests and medical exams await us all when we visit a country.

The epicenter of the pandemic quickly shifted from China to Europe

Doesn't it bother anyone that more people are infected with a smaller population in Finland than in the Russian Federation?

Cash must also be forgotten as this is one of the strictest ways to spread disease. In some countries in Europe, for example in Sweden, there are already many that do not accept cash. It seems to me that the shopkeeper will choose the second one if he is faced with the question of not paying taxes or not being infected with an unknown virus.

But there are pluses. The technology sector will be on the rise all the time, because while people are sitting at home they want to watch movies online, play games or … yes, deliver groceries to their homes. This means that competition between these services will increase significantly and we will ultimately get better services. I'm not even talking about distance learning – it's been developed a long time ago, it's just that many universities got stuck in the 90s of the last century when an audience full of students had to be during the lecture.

The main thing, however, is that humanity will be ready for such outbreaks, and once a null patient is identified, quarantine will be introduced. There is already a lot of data about coronavirus, services where all of this can be examined online. Colonization of new planets could also be added here, but let's take a good look at things – if we don't change our attitudes to this kind of threat, it will happen on the moon, on Mars, and everywhere. Only viruses will be different there.

Now I urge you not to leave your home as much as possible because every time you leave your home you run the risk of not infecting yourself and then others. Yes, coronavirus mortality in young people is very low, but remember that you can become an infectious agent and infect your parents, grandparents. And no matter what your relatives or friends say – try to explain it to them. It only depends on us in what form the coronavirus pandemic affects Russia. Share this article with your relatives, friends and acquaintances – maybe this will save your life.
