Is it possible to get rich if cryptocurrencies are mined on a home computer? Seven-day experiment

Spread the love

Last week we learned that mining is good money again. For example, even with a 3-gigabyte GTX 1060 from Nvidia, you can earn about a dollar a day. Against the background of good news, we decided to test the profitability of mining in practice. For the experiment, we used three computers with different graphics cards, selected three cryptocurrencies and mined for exactly one week. We share the results.

A little introduction. Mining cryptocurrency – not the highest math for the student losers. You do not need a degree and something to start mining. Just a little bit of time and at least one graphics card.

Learn how easy it is to mine cryptocurrency. The video takes less than three minutes.

By the way, the popularity of mining in the world is really growing. On Saturday, the performance of the Bitcoin network reached a new historic maximum. This means it is safer and more reliable than ever.

And now we come to the experiment, which started on the first of July. Below we have identified three separate computers with different graphics card models – Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 3 GB, GTX 1070 and GTX 1080ti. For each of them, we have each selected a cryptocurrency and marked exactly one week. Then they calculated the income, subtracted the electricity bill and compared the profit to the predicted numbers.

With this test we want to show that not mine on a home computer with current crypto currency rates is a luxury. It's better to win a video card and make money when you're not playing.

How much does GTX 1060 bring 3GB

Let's start with the cheapest model – the GeForce GTX 1060 from Nvidia. In our version, the graphics card has 3 GB of memory, which is not enough to mine some of today's popular coins. For example, GTX 1060 3 GB will not be able to dig Aeternity, Grin and Zcoin.

The most profitable cryptocurrency for mining the available cryptocurrency is 2CryptoCalc. The principle of working with a profitability calculator is simple. Specify the hash rate (ie power) of the video card for each algorithm, press the Calculation key and get the income. By the way, 2CryptoCalc will soon be able to memorize the hashes of different graphics card models, so you only need to specify the number of GPUs and the extraction algorithm.

Here's what the calculator recommended for GTX 1060 3GB.

We trusted 2CryptoCalc and chose Bitcoin Gold. Immediately took the course of the coin: on the day the experiment started, it was $ 26.3.

The most pleasant moment has come – the forecast of possible income. We immediately realize that the mine calculator does not know how to look to the future, but forecasts profitability based on the results at the time of calculation. So if the numbers do not converge, there's nothing criminal about it.

2CryptoCalc records $ 4.31 in revenue per annum from Bitcoin Gold. The same screenshot reminds us of another indicator – the complexity of mining. It shows how difficult it is for a video card to solve a network problem, find a block, and get a reward. The higher the complexity, the lower the card yield. On the day the experiment started, the complexity of the Bitcoin Gold network was 196.54K.

The next step is to connect and mine the computer for a week with the 2Miners pool. 2Miners remembers the results of each participant and publishes them publicly. Under the link you can see the detailed statistics of our GTX 1060 3 GB.

The graphics card has earned 0.13551 BTG. By the way, on the last day of the experiment, the bitcoin gold price was $ 26.66 a coin, so the income was $ 3.61. This is significantly less than 0.1635 BTG, which the calculator promised before the test began. Why so?

It's all about the complexity of the network. On the first day of the test it was 196.54 K and the last – 245.09 K. This means that the miners of other coins were connected to the network and the profit pie had to be divided among a large number of people because of the increase in performance. Therefore, our income dropped and.

Where income is, there must be expenditure. In case of mining on the game computer, the money will actively eat the video card. Our computer with a 3 GB GTX 1060 consumes 160 watts per hour or 26.88 kW per week. At an average rate of 4 rubles per kW, we have to pay 107.52 rubles for electricity, which is $ 1.69.

Overall: We have $ 1.92 net profit for the mining week of Bitcoin Gold (3.61-1.69). They are converted to $ 7.68 a week or $ 92 a year. This money is almost enough for a used graphics card of the same model, so that the card actually meets their purchase. By the way, experienced miners can reduce their consumption through fine-tuning. Savings of 20-30 percent.

Mining profitability on GTX 1070

Other graphics cards use the same procedure. For the GTX 1070, 2CryptoCalc proposed the removal of Aeternity – on which day the cryptocurrency brought in $ 1.5 and ranked first in terms of profitability.

The rate on the day of the experiment was $ 0.4701 for an aeternity coin.

Then we set the forecasted income. For the week, the calculator promised 21.2571 AU or 10 USD profitability.

Finally, we started mining at 2Miners during the week. This page summarizes how the GTX 1070 computer works.

In seven days, the graphics card earned 16.74683 AU or $ 7.68. This is 22 percent less than expected and the reason is also the complexity of the mining industry. The indicator rose from 906.9 K to 1.49 M, so jumped 1.65 times. In addition, the price fell – from 0.4701 to 0.4590 dollars. Not surprisingly, the return is different from the forecast.

We understand with electricity. The system unit with the GTX 1070 consumes 270 watts per hour, ie 45.36 kW per test week. For the light 181.44 rubles or 2.86 dollars have to be paid.

Overall: We have $ 4.82 net profit for the week of Aeternity Mining (7.68-2.86). The GTX 1070 earns $ 231 a year. And when the price grows or the level of difficulty goes down, it gets even more.

How much does GTX 1080 ti

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 is the most fun. The former flagship has 11 GB of memory so you can access it. Profitability calculator recommended digging grin on the algorithm Cuckatoo-31. For the latter, you only need at least 11 GB, so that the GTX 1060 3 GB and 1070 can not break down here.

The course grin at the beginning of the experiment – 4.82 dollars.

After determining the price, we also posted the forecast profit. 2CryptoCalc recommended to expect 3.4136 smiles or just over $ 15 a week. In this screenshot we also remember the complexity of mining at the beginning of the experiment – it was 2.92 G.

For a week in the 2Miners pool, the 1080ti graphics card brought in 2.47248 smiles or $ 10.4. This is almost 1 coin less than the predicted calculator. What is the reason for such a drawdown?

First, the complexity of mining was again a cruel joke: it rose from 2.92 G to 3.88 G. Second, the grin rate dropped noticeably. On the last day of the experiment, $ 4.21 was spent per coin, which is 12 percent less.

GTX 1080 ti consumes the most – up to 300 watts per hour or 50.4 kW per week of experiment. The latter costs us 201.6 rubles expenses or $ 3.17.

Overall: We have $ 7.23 net profit for the week of the grin (10.40-3.17). They make a profit of $ 347 a year, which is enough to buy the most expensive version of AirPods. And yet there will be five thousand rubles.

Is it worth it to reduce in 2019?

The week of mining on the graphics card will not allow you to buy Lamborghini immediately together with the yacht, but it will bring some money. At least it's possible to save money on a new card and double your income. And there and close to the full farm on eight GPU.

The market for cryptocurrencies is growing steadily and this should be exploited. For example, the first January was offered for a $ 134 Ethereum coin, and today the price is $ 274. Even a trivial purchase of cryptocurrency at the right time would enable you to earn double profit and make good money.

In general, yes, my current courses are definitely useful and profitable. For more information about mining and cryptocurrency, see Resource 2 Bitcoin. Tips for setting up and overclocking graphics cards can be found in this telegram chat.
