Insomnia increases the risk of stroke and heart attack

How does insomnia cause heart attack and stroke?

In the course of research, a research team from the University of Beijing, led by MD Limming Lee three main symptoms that may indicate an increased risk of developing severe cardiovascular disease in healthy people.

The study involved 487,200 people with a mean age of 51 years. The participants had no history of heart attacks, strokes or similar diseases. Participants were asked if they had symptoms of one or more of the three symptoms of insomnia at least three times a week: falling asleep or sleeping, waking up early, difficulty concentrating during the day due to the fact that the man slept poorly. 11% of people had sleep or sleep disturbances, 10% said they had woken up too early, and 2% had concentration problems during the day. About half of all respondents had all 3 symptoms. Then all people were watched for an average of about 10 years.

During this time 130,032 cases of stroke, myocardial infarction and similar diseases were registered. People who had all three symptoms of insomnia were 18% more likely to develop the above-mentioned illnesses than people who had no manifestation. The researchers considered other factors that could influence the risk of stroke or cardiovascular disease, including alcohol consumption, smoking and physical activity.

People who had trouble falling asleep or had a long sleep were 9% more likely to develop a stroke or heart attack than people who did not have the problem. Participants in the experiment, who woke up early in the morning and could not fall asleep, were 7% more likely to develop these cardiovascular lesions than people with normal sleep patterns. The relationship between the symptoms of insomnia and these diseases is more pronounced in people who did not have high blood pressure at baseline. Therefore, future research should focus on the early detection of such high-risk patients. – said Lee.

The researchers also note that their study does not aim to show a causal relationship between symptoms of insomnia and stroke and heart disease.
