For years, scientists around the world have been developing artificial meat. Moreover, the creation of such a product is extremely important for many reasons. And this is not about the pressure of convinced vegetarians. However, producing a conventional kilogram of artificial meat was, until recently, much more expensive than a kilogram of the present. But it seems that very soon natural meat can disappear from the shelves, because technology does not stop and vegetable meat soon becomes cheaper than usual.
What is bad natural meat?
Even if you discard the ethical side of the problem, meat production causes irreparable environmental damage. For example, as reported by ZME Science, animal husbandry consumes many times more water than growing an equivalent amount of edible plants from which man-made meat could be produced. In addition, waste from meat factories is much more expensive than similar agricultural production.
But despite all its environmental and ethical benefits, natural meat outperforms artificial meat by two of its key indicators: taste and price. But apparently not for long.
Why is art meat more expensive?
This is a very logical question because plants do not require the same careful care as animals. Cultivation of crops generally requires less time and money, but meat based on herbal ingredients is more expensive. Why?
"There are several reasons why artificial meat is more expensive than natural meat," says Liz Specht, senior researcher at the Good Food Institute. "Most importantly, the volume of artificial meat production is still very, very low. Therefore, you can not reduce the price to an acceptable level. The reason for this is that "vegetable meat" companies are not yet big enough to optimize the supply chain. "
However, large manufacturers of artificial meats such as Impossible Foods and Beyond Meat are already significantly expanding their workforce and reducing production technology, leading to a price erosion of their products by the first quarter of 2020.
This is interesting: artificial meat is made from the same "material" as the packaging of goods in IKEA.
How does artificial meat taste?
As far as the question of taste is concerned, everything here is already quite good today. If the consumers did not like burgers with soybeans and chickpea chops a few years ago because of the "vegetable taste", then thanks to the food technology, the artificial meat does not surpass the natural taste properties, it certainly does not give in.
And these are not empty words. A few months ago, the author of these lines in New York tried the cheeseburger of Impossible Burger in one of the local restaurants. The menu indicated that the schnitzel contains no meat, but tastes just like a natural cattle schnitzel. And you know something, the inscription did not lie. I'm not a restaurant critic or a gourmet, but if I had not been told that the meat in the burger is soy, I would not have guessed.
So if you fear that the "unreal meat" will not taste good, you can forget it. And since this market is developing rapidly and the same Impossible Burger already lies beyond the borders of the USA, in the near future almost everyone can try the "meatless hamburger".
