The advantages of artificial intelligence in the detection of breast cancer have been described in the scientific publication ScienceAlert. We mentioned that about 1 million women are diagnosed fatally each year, but things are much worse by 2020. According to foreign sources, an aggressive cancer was found in 2 million patients in 2018. For this reason, the need for regular mammography has increased significantly since the earlier doctors find out about a developing disease, the higher the chance of complete healing.

How to recognize breast cancer

The development of developing tumors in the breast can be done with X-rays, which were recorded with a mammograph. These images are examined by at least two radiologists, but doctors also make serious mistakes when working in a team. However, according to Google Health scientists, they have developed artificial intelligence that has been trained on a variety of X-rays and is able to detect signs of cancer with virtually no errors.

The technology was tested on the example of thousands of women from Great Britain and the USA. After artificial intelligence scanned x-rays, they were further examined by radiologists. As it turned out, the accuracy of the computer in this regard corresponds to the professionalism of experienced doctors. It is noteworthy that artificial intelligence for diagnosis did not examine the patient's medical history, who may have prerequisites for breast cancer.

In the end, it turned out that artificial intelligence reduced the wrong diagnosis by 5.7% in the USA and by 1.2% in the UK. The technology also reduced the likelihood of missing symptoms by 9.4% in the US and 2.7% in the UK. Dominique King, Google Health Director for the UK, said these are excellent results because early diagnosis of cancer makes treatment easier.
